This study proposes a method for controlling surface hydrophobicity using magnetic fields. Surface microstructures affect wettability by influencing surface roughness and air gaps at the liquid–solid interface. A previous study has demonstrated wettability control through mechanical stretching; however, the requirement for external actuation systems limits integration into compact devices. To address this limitation, a magnetic field is employed to induce microstructure deformation without mechanical stretching.
A bilayer specimen is fabricated by sequentially curing magnetic field-responsive polydimethylsiloxane (MPDMS) containing magnetic particles as the patterned layer and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the substrate, using the layer patterns of a 3D-printed mold to form continuous arch-shaped microstructures. A permanent magnet is placed beneath the specimen to induce microstructure deformation, and changes in water contact angle (WCA) are measured.
Experimental results show that the magnetic field induces microstructure deformation, resulting in changes in WCA. These findings demonstrate the potential for controlling hydrophobicity, suggesting applications in compact systems for droplet retention, release, and selective liquid transport.
